Michael Haskins was born and raised outside Boston, in North Quincy, Massachusetts. His career in journalism began while in high school as the weekend midnight - 8 a.m. office boy in the city room of the Boston Record-American and Sunday Advertiser. He left Boston for a college scholarship in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Politics got in the way and he was back at the newspaper within a year. Soon after he left for Los Angeles where he discovered he didn't have the height or good looks for on-air news. He did join the Greater Los Angeles Press Photographers Association, serving one year on its board
