Former Staff Sergeant Robert A. Hall served from 1964 to 1968 in the US Marine Corps, including what he calls "an easy tour" in Vietnam. He later served another six years in the Marine Reserves. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in government and was elected that November to the first of five terms in the Massachusetts state senate, earning an MEd in history at night from Fitchburg State University while a senator.
