Born in 1949, the author D.L. Hale was raised near the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. After attending class in a four-room schoolhouse, David moved to suburbia where he finished high school. He was in the Army and in Vietnam in the sixties and again in 1972, following a stint at Carson-Newman College. He also attended Tennessee State Tech.
