Terry Hager grew up in Hudsonville, Michigan, a largely Dutch/Calvinist community near Grand Rapids. After graduating from Calvin seminary, he worked as an ordained minister at the Grand Rapids Youth Ministry from 1968-1973. His ministry was among gangs, flower children and others who were drawn to the magnet of downtown. His work took him into the streets and the bars as well as into the churches supporting his ministry.
