Sheldon Hackney began his illustrious teaching career at Princeton University in 1965 and rose to the position of provost. He then served as the president of Tulane University from 1975-1981 and was Boies Professor of United States history at the University of Pennsylvania and served as its president from 1981 to 1993. He served as chairman of the National Endowment for Humanities from 1993-97.
