Gustafson (Chuck), in World War II he became an Air Force pilot and received commendations as a flying instructor, training French cadets from France and North Africa. After the War he returned to the University of North Dakota and obtained B.A. and M.A. degrees in English and Psychology, while sandwiching in stints as a radio and print journalist.
