Alma Guillermoprieto writes for "The New York Review of Books" and "The New Yorker" and for several publications in Latin America. Born in Mexico, she has lived there and in Central America, the United States, Colombia, and Brazil. She is the author of "Samba" (which was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award) and "The Heart That Bleeds," Named a MacArthur Fellow in 1995, she has also received an Alicia Patterson fellowship, Columbia University's Maria Moors Cabot Prize, and the Latin American Studies Association Media Award. She lives in Mexico City.
