Joseph Groth served as Director of Commercial Diversification for Hughes Aircraft Company's Research and Development Group. He conceived the utilization of synchronous communications satellites to network cable TV systems which led to the creation of a number of joint ventures with TelePrompTer Corporation. At TelePrompTer, he produced the first "Live from Lincoln Center" telecast, and other pioneering "Live Via Satellite" telecasts.
