Robert "Mick" Greene was born in Richfield, Utah in 1934, moved to Taft, California with his parents, and graduated from High School there in 1951. He lettered in football, swimming, and springboard diving, and was an Eagle Scout. He was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy in 1952 and graduated in 1956. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force and became a fighter pilot, flying the F-86, F-100, F-4, F-104, and T-39 aircraft.
