Gough and his ex-wife Judy spent the summer of 1965 living on a soybean and cotton farm with an African-American family. Then, upon graduation from law school, Gough joined the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, investigating beatings, harassment and voter intimidation of blacks in Southeast Mississippi. After his service in the Civil Rights Division, Gough returned to California where he practiced civil rights law for 42 years.
