Dr. Geddes was born in Scotland and educated in Canada, where he received his B.S., M.S., and D.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec. He received a Ph.D. in Physiology from Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston, TX. While at Baylor, he was Assistant, Associate, and then full Professor of Physiology and Director of the Division of Biomedical Engineering.
