Born the last of eight children to parents Sarah and Bruce, Analida Maria Garrett quickly became Sammi. She had long dark hair when she was born as did a comic strip maven, Long Sam. The nurses gave her the nickname and it followed her throughout her life. She grew up in Apalachin, NY and attended Owego Apalachin Schools graduating from OFA in 1974.
