Captain Witold Pilecki (1901-1948), Polish Army Officer and resistance leader, volunteered for secret undercover mission as a prisoner at Auschwitz to smuggle out intelligence and build resistance organization among the prisoners. Succeeded in mission, survived nearly three years before escaping Auschwitz. Fought in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, ended war as German POW.
