Galambos travelled extensively in England, Spain, and Hungary after serving a portion of his service in an elite unit of the Israel Defense Forces. Sent to Sudan in 1983 by the American Association for Ethiopian Jewry to assist in the clandestine rescue and relocation of Jews to Israel, he was captured. While under house arrest he and a fellow prisoner escaped through the brush to Zaire, but were later returned to Sudanese custody.
