Freund was born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany where he grew up. From age 16 to 19 he was a soldier in World War II. After discharge from POW camp he studied medicine and graduated from the Medical School of the Goethe University in Frankfurt. He completed an internship in Ottawa, Canada, three years of residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago where he married. Following two years of fellowship at McGill University in Montreal he returned to Chicago to practice medicine. He then joined the faculty of the University of Florida College of Medicine.
