Jo Hoyt Freeman grew up in Iowa on the family farm outside Corning. She attended Simpson College and the University of Nebraska, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. She later received a Master of Science in Education from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a much-loved English, Latin, and French teacher at Warren Harding Junior High in Des Moines until her retirement. Claude Freeman met Jo in 1957.
