Frank D. Fincham obtained a doctoral degree in social psychology as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He then completed postdoctoral training in clinical psychology at Stony Brook University before assuming a position as assistant professor at the University of Illinois, where he ultimately became a professor and the Director of Clinical Training.
