Exton was born in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution. She spent her early years in Eastern Europe. Educated in England, she came to the United States on Labor Day of 1939, four days after the outbreak of World War II. Her knowledge of languages and familiarity with many of the European countries led her to employment at CBS News, where she joined an international contingent of linguists at the renowned network Listening Post.
