Judy Dykstra-Brown was born and raised in Murdo, South Dakota, whose population of 700 has since dwindled down to 550. She earned her Masters degree in creative writing from the University of Wyoming and taught English and writing for ten years in Australia, Ethiopia and Wyoming before moving to California to study and work in film production. There she joined the Jack Grapes poetry workshop and was a co-editor of "The Sculpture Garden Review," a Venice-based poetry journal.
