Duke obtained a B.S. in Chemistry from UCLA, in Westwood California. After working as a chemist he returned to graduate school at USC in Los Angeles, where by competitive examination and performance he won an NIH Honor Fellowship. Training at USC, he graduated with the Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from the USC Medical School Pathology Department. Next followed a year's Postdoctoral training at the U. of Nebraska's Medical Biochemistry Department, studying the Free Radical Theory of Aging.
