Maris D'souza (familian Borja, which means "of the Borja family") grew up in the village of Agat, by the sea, on the island of Guam. As a child, she spent many years covertly cartooning in the back of the classroom at Agat Elementary School, Piti Middle School, and Oceanview High School, instead of "using her time wisely" like her Filipino teachers demanded every day. Growing up, she was an avid reader of the Pacific Daily News, which inspired her to receive a journalism degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. Today, she writes short stories as a hobby.
