John Creighton read history at Cambridge before studying Arabic at the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies (MECAS) in Lebanon and undertaking postgraduate work at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University. He has lived for many years in the Gulf with lengthy spells in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia where he was involved in the development of major projects for both national and Western oil companies. Since leaving Baghdad in 1983, he has been engaged in research and part-time consultancy on Middle East affairs.
