Cranton graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1964. He served as president of the Smyth County Medical Society, Virginia, and was chief-of-staff of a U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. He is a fellow and past president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine and a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice.
