Born in Lancashire in 1935, Joyce Collinson moved with her family to London in 1945. Winning a Junior Scholarship to St. Martin's School of Art, graduating in 1954, she then trained as a singer. She was also a teacher, including a notable spell at Holloway Prison where she staged several musical productions, an experience she very much enjoyed. She sang with the Philharmonia Chorus as she began her solo career, benefitting greatly from this unique experience. She worked alongside some legendary figures such as Maria Callas.
