Mary Cochrane was born in Glasgow in 1965 and grew up with three brothers in a poor part of the city. She moved to London at the age of twenty-one and spent the next ten years working in factories and offices. In 1997 - 2005 Mary studied at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and attained a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Psychology. In 2005 she began a career as a Research Psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, but was forced to leave in 2011 due to prolonged ill-health.
