William MacCullum Clow was born in 1853 in Glasgow, Scotland. Early on, his family lived in Auckland, New Zealand and he went to school there. But when he was seventeen years old, he and his family were living at 159 North Street, Glasgow, Scotland. His father, Andrew Clow, age 51, was a successful Master Carpenter who had several men in his employ, and his mother, Jane, was a homemaker. He had an older sister and a younger brother.
