Eleanor Church was born in Yonkers, New York, was adopted right after birth and raised in a middle-class, Jewish home where education was of primary importance. She is a graduate of Hunter College of the City University of New York and earned two master's degrees from Herbert H. Lehman College and Chapman College. She taught first grade for ten years in Westchester County, then moved to Carmel, California where she opened a gallery and later returned to teaching at a California men's correctional facility.
