Nan Chase was born in Belgium and lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a youngster. She was first introduced to watercolors as a student at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge. It was a tremendously exciting experience as she felt that she had been failing miserably at drawing horses and dogs, the main interest of her classmates. She graduated from Wellesley College, majoring in Art and spent a graduate year at Harvard studying Fine Arts, with the intention of going into museum work; then, World War II intervened and she went to Washington to work for the Navy Department and the OSS (now known
