Carla Charter often says her writing began as soon as she could hold a pen. Although she wrote all throughout her childhood and college years her journalism career began after taking a job as a clerk at a local newspaper, typing in Home News and Obituaries. When one of the paper's correspondents unexpectedly left her position, Charter was handed a notebook and pen in order to cover a local meeting. Thus began her 20 year newspaper career.
