Carpenter learned to hunt and fish by the age of four. He later became a bounty hunter, then served his terms in the military. Following that, he became a private detective and professional bodyguard. He left law enforcement to become a radio and TV journalist and news director, then a national automotive magazine editor and author. In later years, he owned a commercial general contracting firm, specializing in hi-rise buildings. Semi-retired now, he owns an upscale cycle store.
