Stuart Butler is a retired assistant branch chief of the Old Military and Civil Branch, National Archives and Records Administration. Butler is the foremost expert on Virginia in the War of 1812, having recently written the first book on the state's role in the war, "Defending the Old Dominion in the War of 1812." Among his other books are "Virginia Soldiers in the U.S. Army" and "A Guide to Virginia Militia Units in the War of 1812."
