Bredette C. Murray was a remarkable journalist who arrived in Texas at the age of 22 and operated a newspaper in Mesilla, Arizona, before the Civil War. After serving in a Confederate cavalry unit there, he moved to San Antonio and Austin, where he helped to found what became the Austin American-Statesman. In 1872, with his friend Lewis S. Owings, first governor of the Arizona Territory, Murray moved to the new town of Denison, Texas. He published newspapers there for the next 40 years.
