Jim Browning was born and raised in a rural community in north east Alabama. He enlisted in the US Army soon after his 18th birthday and was accepted in the army leadership program for future non-commissioned officers. He served as an infantry platoon leader during the Korean Conflict. As a casualty of war he spent six plus months in four field hospitals, two hospital ships and one base hospital located at Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan.
