Paul was born in Portsmouth, England, his father was a Leading Physical Trainer (LPTI) in the Royal Navy at the time. However, he was brought up mainly in the North, both Yorkshire and Lancashire, when his father left the RN to become a publican. He applied to join the navy in Leeds when he was seventeen, eventually joining the RN in July 1980 soon after turning eighteen. Little did he know that day, that he would spend the vast majority of his naval life in Plymouth way down South, with a short spell in Portsmouth.
