Leonard Leslie Brooke was born on September 24, 1862 in Birkenhead, England. He became a leading illustrator and author of children's books with watercolors and pen-and-ink line drawings after illustrating a nursery rhyme book for author Andrew Lang. Brooke married Sybil Diana Brooke and they had two sons, one of whom became British Home Secretary. Leonard passed away in 1940, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most skillful and prolific illustrators and authors, of more than two dozen books.
