CHRISTOPHER BROOKE is best known as a historian and a medievalist, and in this book he uses the techniques of historical criticism to re-examine Jane Austen's novels. His books include The Monastic World, The Structure of Medieval Society, Europe in the Central Middle Ages and The Medieval Idea of Marriage; he has also written on aspects of the eighteenth-century church, which was such an integral part of Jane Austen's family life and appears so often, and so variously, in her novels.
