The son of a newsman, Walt Breede grew up in White Plains, New York and graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Following graduation, he was commissioned in the Marine Corps and served in a variety of command and staff positions world-wide, including a combat tour in Vietnam as an artillery forward observer and service in Japan and Turkey as well as California, Oklahoma, Virginia and Washington, D.
