Richard Bowlby qualified in medical and scientific photography in 1968 and, until he formally retired in 1999, had a successful career illustrating medical research; in particular, he helped to communicate the findings of the researchers with whom he worked by producing photographs and academic videotapes. Since retiring, his main preoccupation has been to study and disseminate more widely the work of his father, Dr. John Bowlby, the "begetter" of the body of knowledge which came to be known as "attachment theory."
