U.R. Bowie studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute (Monterey, California), while serving in the U.S. Army. After getting a Master's degree in Russian at Tulane University and a Doctorate at Vanderbilt, Bowie taught Russian language, literature and folklore for thirty years at Miami University. In 1999-2000 Bowie taught as a Fulbright scholar in Great Novgorod, Russia (Novgorod State University).
