Margie Botkin grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and at the age of 18 moved to Chicago to attend the American Academy of Art and work as an apprentice in an advertising agency with Haddon Sundblom (of the Coca-Cola Santa fame). She returned to Indianapolis and became the associate editor of a commercial trade magazine for L.S. Ayres & Co. department store, and later was hired as technical illustrator with the Civil Aeronautics Administration.
