James D Bjorken obtained his BSc from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956 and his PhD in Physics from Stanford University in 1959. Since 1998 he has been Professor Emeritus at Stanford.In the period 1960-70 Prof Bjorken coauthored with Sidney Drell the pair of textbooks Relativistic Quantum Mechanics and Relativistic Quantum Fields; and, with Sheldon Glashow, presented arguments for the existence of a fourth kind of quark, suggesting its name, "charmed."
