Andrew J "Andy" Best (Sr) was born in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix, Arizona on December 23, 1934, early in the Great Depression. His father was an Alabama Share Cropper who fled the draft of 1917 and his mother was a cotton-picker daughter from Baird, Texas. Andy attended Stevenson and Monroe grade schools in Phoenix and after being released from a juvenile detention center, went on to graduate from Phoenix Technical High School.
