Robert Charles Benchley (1889 - 1945) was an American humorist best known as a newspaper columnist and film star. From his beginnings at the Harvard Lampoon to his essays and articles for The New Yorker, his absurdist humor reflected a style all his own. He was a member of the fabled Algonquin Round Table. His short films were popular with audiences and How to Sleep won an Academy Award as Best Short Subject in 1935.
