Jessie H. Bancroft served as Director of Physical Training in the public Schools of Brooklyn (1893-1903) and then for New York City public schools (1904-1928) when Brooklyn was incorporated. The author of several books on physical health, gaming, and education, Bancroft was the first woman to become a member of the American Academy of Physical Education (AAPE) and was a founding member of the American Physical Education Association (APEA).
