Asgedom fled war-torn Ethiopia at age three. For the next three years he lived with his family in a Sudanese refugee camp. He immigrated to the United States at age seven. Growing up, he overcame linguistic, cultural and financial challenges and eventually earned a full-tuition scholarship to Harvard University. Mawi went on to win many top honors at Harvard.
