Born in The Netherlands, Renier Artens grew up in the 1960s and 1970s in what is now Zimbabwe during the turbulent years of Rhodesia's Bush War against terrorism, taking time out to earn his Bachelors Degree in Journalism from Rhodes University in South Africa. He returned to work for the Rhodesia Ministry of Information and while he did not fight in the war, as a government Information Officer he experienced in a uniquely intimate way the country's final years leading up to the transition to majority rule.
