James Apps lives in the UK on the Isle of Sheppey, originating in England and after leaving secondary school was apprenticed as a Fitter and Turner. He followed the trade in the UK, emigrated to New Zealand in 1971 and lived there and in Australia until returning to the UK in the year 2000. Sustaining an injury in 1987 James Apps was forced to retire from his trade and bummed around trying to recover before eventually taking up writing poetry which he read in pubs and other venues in Auckland.
