Martha Alexander says that the Blackboard Bear stories were originally inspired by her four-year-old nephew, Christopher, who had a rich creative ability to entertain himself. "Blackboard Bear emerged one night, onto paper through my pencil, from the joy of recalling how Christopher acted out his exciting adventures."
