Domingos Monteiro was born in 1902 in Tras-os-Montes, in the north of Portugal, and died in 1980. He graduated in Law at the University of Lisbon. He is the author of several volumes of essays on cultural and political topics and of a few volumes of poetry. However he owes his success as a writer mostly to his work in prose fiction. He published his first two collections of short stories in 1943 and 1945 and his last book, a collection of sonnets, was published in 1978.
