Henry O, along with his wife Sue, were part of a group of pioneering young Black men and women that integrated Arlington State College (ASC), now The University of Texas at Arlington, in the fall of 1963. He spent three years and three summers at ASC as a Music major in a two year program. He then joined the Army to attend the Armed Forces School of Music. After a three year career as a Military musician he returned to College to earn a Bachelor's degree.
